With 2012 being the first official full year of our non-profit status, we had started laying the groundwork towards the end of 2011, to hold or participate in lots of events. Our goals are to either to hold adoption events, BAPBR awareness and publicity events (to quote the Dr. Pepper commercial, “We DO exist!”)–particularly in new markets and finding new audiences for the opportunity to show people what great dogs pit bull type dogs are and, lastly, educational events.
On April 1st, we were able to participate in a very cool event opportunity – a special screening of “Beyond the Myth”, a new documentary about what Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is, how it ravages communities and why it just plain doesn’t work. It was a very well done feature and brought out a sold-out crowd–made us proud to be from Portland!
Portland Pit Bull Project helped to organize the event as a fundraiser primarily for Family Dogs New Life Shelter, but they also invited lots of non-profit animal organizations to the party–to share table space with each other, help generate more buzz and attendance for the event and raise some funds for themselves, as well. BAPBR was lucky enough to share a table with Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS). BAPBR friends came out in droves and loaded up on their t-shirts and bumper stickers (we spotted someone driving around town the following week with their bumper sticker on the back of their car–we might have shouted out to ourselves in gleeful surprise).
Our other friends from the Oregon Humane Society, Fences for Fido and Diamond Cut Loyalty joined MCAS and BAPBR, and of course Portland Pit Bull Project and Family Dogs New Life Shelter were one perfect consolidated group for this powerful movie and welcomed the pit bull type dog lovers of Portland with open arms.
It was fantastic for us to see all our friends and supporters and meet so many new people that we had only seen on our Facebook page prior to April 1st. We have a lot more events in store for 2012 and we hope we continue to meet more and more of you throughout the year–meeting you all gives us a little boost of energy that helps us keep on going, knowing what great fans are in our BAPBR dogs’ corner!
Next up, mark your calendar for our Bingo Night at Hamburger Mary’s on Sunday, June 17th at 7pm. This will be a huge fundraiser for us that will really help support our reach and cover the needs of even more dogs in need. For $20, you will get an evening of bingo with many chances to win super prizes–plus, we will have a brief live auction and special “fund a project” interlude. And of course, we’ll have t-shirts and bumper stickers for sale. We are excited to see you again (or meet you for the first time)! http://www.facebook.com/events/355930517789964/
